I have been thinking on unity. I’m sure there is much more to it than we can comprehend this side of heaven. But Jesus prayed that we would be one as the Trinity is one (John 17:11), that we would be one in Them (vs21), that we be made perfect in one (vs 23). We are being brought into the unity of three persons who are one God. It is a miracle of the indwelling Spirit. It’s more than harmony or absence of conflict, though that’s included. But it’s having the mind of Christ, the very life of Christ, it’s doing the Father’s will, it’s having one Lord, one faith, one baptism into Him. It’s one purpose and mission. One love. It’s being one with Him and with each other. Not perfectly realized yet – but it’s certain, and we can experience it to a degree now.
Made me think: How many churches does God have? One. How many brides? One.
In our fallen state, selfishness and independence are our default, and they cause so much grief. To think that God is restoring unity, the kind that exists in the Trinity and He’s bringing us into it, is mind boggling. But then He keeps me boggled most of the time! It’s a gift!!
This brought me to the fact that we are being transformed into the image of Christ – another mind-boggling truth. Saving us, forgiving us, wiping the slate clean – that’s amazing grace. Transforming us into the image of Christ is a whole other plane – beyond imagining. Why would He do that?
Then this awesome thought came. When Adam named all the animals, there was no one like him – no bride for him. So, God, from Adam’s side, made him a bride like him.
There was no bride for Christ – no one like Him. So, God is making Him one by transforming us into the image of Christ. It required a wound in the side of Jesus also. Suddenly cast a whole new light on this transformation process. Is not that beyond all that we would ask or imagine?!!
Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to HIS power that is at work WITHIN US, to Him be glory. Eph. 3:20-21
